Critical Reflection

Module Learning

Walking out of this module, I personally feel that my communication skills have improved by a noticeable amount. I find myself being able to speak to my peers more comfortably during our class presentations, and it was because of the need to speak to some of them during class. Why that helped me tremendously is because we always spoke about the objectives of a certain assignment. Coming from different backgrounds or having different personalities did not matter because we were always on the same page, talking and discussing about the assignment. Though our conversations were not deeper on the emotional scale, the discussion amongst my peers helped me burst my introvert bubble. Apart from that, I feel that I have learnt a thing or two about critical thinking skills, although there is definitely more that I can learn from. Over the past twelve or so, I started to incorporate a deeper level of thinking when it comes to completing an assignment, or when it comes to just going on about my daily life. With the critical thinking skills that I picked up, I am able to understand things more, and not just judge a certain situation or a topic on a surface level. A thing or two that I can do to improve on my both my communication and critical thinking skills is to consciously practice it. Good critical thinking skills are developed when you are consistently applying a deep level of thinking, and good communication skills comes when you speak more in a crowd, or writing a report or an essay that has good language use.

Project Learning

Through the assignments that we did over the course of the module, one of the more notable lessons learnt was when we did the assignment for a mechanical innovation on a product. Specifically, when I had to research the benefits of the product that we proposed. It was challenging because our product, the Lithium-Sulphur battery, is still in the works of research, and coming up with convincing pointers was difficult because it has not been implemented in any system. What helped me get through this assignment was the fact that I had help form my teammates,  and something that I realised about us was that we applied critical thinking in each and every component of the assignment. We were always discussing about the topic, which led us to having very productive conversations with one another. From this project, I learnt that teamwork and communication are skills that every group should possess, and I will be practicing the skills I have learnt through the project, into future assignments with different people.

Formal Self-Introduction Letter

Dear Prof Brad, I would like to take this chance to introduce myself, I am Meng Kiat, but all of my friends call me Meng for short. I graduated from Nanyang Polytechnic in the year 2020, having completed the diploma in aerospace and aeronautical technology as my course of study. I have had an interest in the world of aerospace since I was a kid back in primary school. I got fascinated by aircrafts and the big engines that run them when my dad brought me to Changi beach to watch aeroplanes fly over our heads at the jetty. I decided to take up mechanical engineering at SIT as I saw it as an opportunity to study a broader and wider range of subjects and topics related to engineering, as aerospace engineering is quite a niche field. Mechanical engineering is a platform for me to expand my knowledge as an engineer in different fields as there are a couple of specialties for us to get elected in. However, I am still working towards being an aerospace engineer in the future as my career. Bein

Task 3: The importance of communication skills for engineers

29 August 2022 “Communication skills are an essential component in the education of engineering students to facilitate not just students’ education but also to prepare them for their future careers.” Marc Riemer, Faculty of Engineering, Monash University (2007) According to Marc Riemer, Faculty of Engineering, Monash University (2007), communication skills for engineering students are important because it enables the students to prepare for their careers. - Edited 5 September 2022

Design Summary Draft 1: Lithium-Ion Batteries

The article “How an accidental discovery made this year could change the world”, The Future (April 2022) explains how the newfound Lithium-Sulphur (Li-S) powered battery could be implemented and change the way we live our lives. Lithium-Ion (Li-ion) batteries have always been the go to choice for a wide range of applications, however, the use of Li-S batteries could end up being revolutionary due to its increase in battery lifecycle, as well as being more environmentally friendly to mass produce. Weighing approximately 60% less than Li-ion batteries, and having twice the lifespan, going fully electric in commercial transportation seems feasible. In addition, Earth being lithium and sulphur rich makes mining resources for lithium-sulphur batteries more eco friendly. Engineers and scientists at the University of Drexel, California (USA), believe that Li-S batteries have the potential to revolutionise the way we live, compared to their Li-ion counterparts, and these are some of the fact
