Critical Reflection

Module Learning Walking out of this module, I personally feel that my communication skills have improved by a noticeable amount. I find myself being able to speak to my peers more comfortably during our class presentations, and it was because of the need to speak to some of them during class. Why that helped me tremendously is because we always spoke about the objectives of a certain assignment. Coming from different backgrounds or having different personalities did not matter because we were always on the same page, talking and discussing about the assignment. Though our conversations were not deeper on the emotional scale, the discussion amongst my peers helped me burst my introvert bubble. Apart from that, I feel that I have learnt a thing or two about critical thinking skills, although there is definitely more that I can learn from. Over the past twelve or so, I started to incorporate a deeper level of thinking when it comes to completing an assignment, or when it comes to just goi

Summary Reader Response Final Draft: Lithium-Sulphur Batteries

The article “How an accidental discovery made this year could change the world” by Lockett (Apr 2022) explains how the newfound Lithium-Sulphur (Li-S) powered battery could be implemented and change the way we live our lives. Lithium-Ion (Li-ion) batteries have always been the go to choice for a wide range of applications. However, the use of Li-S batteries could end up being revolutionary due to its potential increase in battery lifecycle, as well as being more environmentally friendly to mass produce. Weighing approximately 60% less than Li-ion batteries, and having twice the lifespan, going fully electric in commercial transportation now seems feasible. In addition, Earth being lithium and sulphur rich makes mining resources for lithium-sulphur batteries much more eco-friendly, as well as ensuring that there is a strong supply chain in the industry. However, Engineers and scientists at the University of Drexel, California (USA), are still doing more research to make the use of Li-S

Formal Self-Introduction Letter

Dear Prof Brad, I would like to take this chance to introduce myself, I am Meng Kiat, but all of my friends call me Meng for short. I graduated from Nanyang Polytechnic in the year 2020, having completed the diploma in aerospace and aeronautical technology as my course of study. I have had an interest in the world of aerospace since I was a kid back in primary school. I got fascinated by aircrafts and the big engines that run them when my dad brought me to Changi beach to watch aeroplanes fly over our heads at the jetty. I decided to take up mechanical engineering at SIT as I saw it as an opportunity to study a broader and wider range of subjects and topics related to engineering, as aerospace engineering is quite a niche field. Mechanical engineering is a platform for me to expand my knowledge as an engineer in different fields as there are a couple of specialties for us to get elected in. However, I am still working towards being an aerospace engineer in the future as my career. Bein

Critical Thinking: The Soul of Communication

5 September 2022 After I read the excerpt from Pearson's TalentLens Website, I was surprised to find out that the consequences of poor communication are financial losses in businesses, but not shocked at all. In a current world where communication has evolved into different forms, it is important that everyone equips themselves with good and effective communication skills across all different forms. A pre-requisite to having good communication skills is having good critical thinking skills. Having good critical thinking skills allows us to think about the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats about a problem,  as well as allowing us to think about a solution for the problem that has occurred.  Critical thinking is a key factor in effective communication, as communication is all about the transaction of thoughts, feelings and information between two different parties. Having good critical thinking skills allows each party to think about a situation or problem without an

Task 3: The importance of communication skills for engineers

29 August 2022 “Communication skills are an essential component in the education of engineering students to facilitate not just students’ education but also to prepare them for their future careers.” Marc Riemer, Faculty of Engineering, Monash University (2007) According to Marc Riemer, Faculty of Engineering, Monash University (2007), communication skills for engineering students are important because it enables the students to prepare for their careers. - Edited 5 September 2022
